WHAT IS REKEYING AND WHY DO I NEED IT?

Rekeying is useful for situations where your existing locks are no longer effective, or when you wish to replace your existing keys with new ones. Rekeying is also a good idea if you lose your keys or when someone stole them. In short, rekeying is a good security precaution.

CAN OUR LOCKSMITHS CUT A KEY BASED ON ITS NUMBER
In most cases locksmiths rely on the code numbers found on locks to cut the keys. This is common practice among vehicle keys, padlock keys, keys for filing cabinets, etc. So VIN numbers are not really necessary.

In short, although each individual lock is only compatible with its own respective key, all of them are compatible with the same master key. Other similar systems include sub-master keying and grand-master keying.
